    Tampa Bay’s History

    The earliest evidence of human habitation directly on the shores of Tampa Bay comes from the Manasota culture, who lived in the area beginning around 5,000–6,000 years ago. This culture was succeeded by the Tocobaga, who built their principal town near today’s Safety Harbor in the northwest corner of Old Tampa Bay before it came under Spanish rule in the 1500s. The United States acquired Florida from Spain in 1819. By 2010, the Tampa Bay Area was home to over 4 million residents.

    Tampa Bay, Florida is centered at 27° 45′ 45″ North and 82° 32′ 45″ W West. It has a total area of  over 400 square miles (1,000 km2). Its large watershed covers portions of five Florida counties and approximately 2,200 square miles (5,700 km2).

Children attending elementary school go to Gorrie Elementary School, Mabry Elementary School, Mitchell Elementary School, Roosevelt Elementary School, and Tinker Elementary School. A middle school in Tampa Bay is Wilson Middle School. The high school in Tampa Bay is Plant High School.
