St. Petersburg is located in Pinellas County. According to data from the 2014 census estimate, St. Petersburg is the 5th most populous city in the state of Florida and the largest city in Florida that is not a county seat.
St. Petersburg’s History
St. Petersburg was co-founded in the 1880s by Peter Demens. Demens is also the founder of Odessa, Florida. Both communities were named after places that Demens visited in his native country.
John C. Williams was a second co-founder of the city and purchased the land for it in 1875. St. Petersburg was incorporated as a town on February 29, 1892. In 1903, St. Petersburg was incorporated as a city.
St. Petersburg’s Geography
St. Petersburg is located on a peninsula between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. St. Petersburg is centered at 27°46′23″ North and 82°38′24″ West. It has a total area of 137.6 sq mi (356.4 km2), of which 61.7 sq mi (159.9 km2) is land and 75.9 sq mi (196.5 km2) is water.

St. Petersburg is a well-known tourist destination. The city hosts the St. Petersburg Museum of History, a Holocaust Museum, and the Salvador Dali Museum. In addition, the St. Petersburg Pier is set to be reopen in 2018. The city also offers shopping, restaurants, boating and other waterfront attractions.

The high schools in St. Petersburg are Gibbs High School, Lakewood High School, Northeast High School, and St. Petersburg High School. Private schools in St. Petersburg include Canterbury School of Florida, St. Petersburg Catholic High School, Shorecrest Preparatory School, St. Petersburg Collegiate High School, Keswick Christian School, Admiral Farragut Academy and Northside Christian School.
Art and Culture in St. Petersburg
The Salvador Dalí Museum is a major attraction in St. Petersburg because it offers the largest collection of works of art by Salvador Dalí, outside of Europe. The museum is located in downtown St. Petersburg and houses 7 of the 18 “masterwork” paintings by Dalí. Other attractions in St. Petersburg include the Great Explorations Children’s Museum, Grand Central District, and Museum of Fine Arts.
