Odessa is located in Pasco County. Odessa consists of mainly open land, ranching and horse properties. In recent years, the area has expanded with suburban property developments.

Odessa’s History

Odessa was founded in the 1880s by Peter Demens. Demens is also the founder of St. Petersburg, Florida. Both communities were named after places that Demens visited in his native country. Many of the community’s original residents were employed by a large sawmill. However, the sawmill burned down in a fire in 1922.

Until 2004, Odessa also shared a small airport with Trinity, Florida, known as The Tampa Bay Executive Airport. However, this airport has since closed.

Today, Odessa is growing very rapidly. Between 2000 and 2010, the population more than doubled and there are now over 7,000 residents living in this community. The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,864, and the median income for a family was $55,461. The area is currently undergoing rapid development as the Tampa area expands.

Odessa’s Geography

Odessa, Florida is centered at 28°11′0″ North and 82°34′6″ West. It has a total area of 5.6 square miles (15 km2) of which, 5.3 square miles (14 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 km2) is water.

Recreational Amenities in Odessa

Odessa Community Park is a neighborhood park that consists of 29 acres. With outdoor facilities including a basketball court, playground, tennis courts, and open play area, residents can utilize the facilities year round. The Community Center is also available for rental for hosting events.

Other parks in the area include Lake Rogers Park, Peterson Road Park, Keystone Park, and Lake Park. Residents can also enjoy campgrounds for RV parking and trails that are located nearby.

Odessa has various public and private schools. The public district schools in Odessa are operated by Pasco County School District. Children attending elementary school go to Hammond Elementary School. Walker Middle Magnet School is a middle school in Odessa. Private schools in Odessa include Odessa Christian School and Outreach Christian School.

Art and Culture in Odessa

Art, dance, and martial arts classes are offered by local venues in Odessa. However, residents can also visit attractions in nearby Tampa since Odessa is primarily a residential community.
