Brandon is located in Hillsborough County. Brandon sits approximately midway between Tampa and Plant City. There are also several neighborhoods within Brandon that include Barrington Oaks East, Brandon Hills, Kensington Estates, La Viva, and Limona.
Brandon’s History
In 1858, John Brandon purchased 40 acres of land in the New Hope area, which would later become Brandon. He also purchased 160 acres, which he named Brandon. In 1890, with the arrival of the Florida Central and Peninsula Railroad, the area was built up and that same year a surveyor named the community in honor of John Brandon.
The 1950s began a period of accelerated growth in the area with the establishment of the Brandon Chamber of Commerce in 1959. On September 27, 1986, I-75 opened to Brandon which helped the population reach over 100,000 residents as it stands today. Today, Brandon continues to grow very rapidly.
Brandon’s Geography
The United States Census Bureau defines a Census-Designated Place of Brandon centered 27°56′ North and 82°17′ West. It has a total area of 29.3 sq mi (75.9 km2) of which, 28.7 sq mi (74.4 km2) is land and 0.6 sq mi (1.5 km2) is water.
Recreational Amenities in Brandon
All Persons Rotary Park offers a baseball field, picnic shelters and a playground. The picnic shelters are also available for rent for special events. The majority of the parks in the area are still within a close distance of Brandon in Tampa and Plant City.
Brandon offers a number of shopping amenities with the Westfield Shopping Center nearby. Regency Center and Plaza Bella offer additional options for shopping with Plaza Bella providing upscale shopping options.
Brandon Schools
Brandon has various public and private schools. The public district schools in Brandon are operated by Hillsborough County Public Schools. Children attending elementary school go to Brooker Elementary School, Buckhorn Elementary School, Kingswood Elementary School, Limona Elementary School and others. The middle schools in Brandon are Burns Middle School, McLane Middle School, and Mann Middle School. The high school in Brandon is Brandon High School. Private schools in Brandon include Bell Shoals Baptist Academy, Brandon Academy Private School, and Central Baptist School. A campus of Southern Technical College is also located here.
Art and Culture in Brandon
The Hillsborough County Fair is an attraction that draws visitors from around the area. It hosts livestock shows, a pageant and other exciting events that can offer an afternoon of fun for residents.
Although Brandon does not have any museums, the Center Place Fine Arts & Civic Association services as a resource for promotion of the fine arts and civic involvement. There, residents can access the library/cultural center. Art workshops, a children’s theater and other special events and exhibits are also available.
